Developmental Drill: Redback One Carbine Shooting Standards

226241_223552374321710_393510_nDeveloped in 2011 by instructors at Redback One, the Carbine Shooting Standards (CSS) was designed to be used as a 8-Stage diagnostic self-test for students before classes, then again at the end to demonstrate improvement or applied lessons. Students are also required to perform the CSS using a modified IDPA target and attain a 80% Go/No-Go prior to starting Redback One’s advanced coursework. As an alternative for your use, a 6″ (head/pelvis zone) and 8″ (chest zone) paper plate or bullseye-type target can also be used.

  • All Stages are shot from the ready position indicated.
    • Low Ready – The weapon will be mounted into the shoulder, the barrel will oriented at the base of the target stand, the shooter will be looking over the sights with the weapon on safe. 
    • High Ready – The weapon will angled diagonally across the body, the optic or rear sight assembly will be touching the shooters chest, the butt-stock will be under the arm, the barrel will be underneath head height and the weapon will be on safe.
  • Each round is scored as 1 point.
  • Each round outside the target zone is 0 points.
  • Each round after the time limit is 0 points.

Stage 1: (1×10-round magazine)

  • Distance: 7m
  • Start Position: Low Ready
  • Sequence:
    • 1 round to the chest (~0.80 seconds)
    • 2 round string to the chest, 1 round to the head (~2.0 seconds)
    • 6 round string to the chest (~2.0 seconds)

Stage 2: (1×10-round magazine)

  • Distance: 7m
  • Start Position: High Ready
  • Sequence:
    • 1 rounds to the chest (~1.20 seconds)
    • 4 rounds to the chest, 2 rounds to the head (~3.0 seconds)
    • 1 round to the chest, 1 rounds to the head, 1 rounds to the chest (~2.0 seconds)

Stage 3: (1×3-round magazine, 1×4 round magazine)

  • Distance 7m
  • Start Position: Low Ready
  • Sequence:
    • From strong side 1 round to the chest, transition to weak side, 1 round to the chest (~4.0 seconds)
    • From weak side 1 round to chest, reload, 1 to round chest (~6.0 seconds)
    • From weak side 1 round to chest, transition to strong side, 1 round to chest, reload, 1 round to chest (~11.0 seconds)

Stage 4: (2×10-round magazines)

  • Distance: 7m
  • Start Position: High Ready
  • Sequence:
    • 10 rounds chest, reload, 10 rounds chest (~12.0 seconds)

Stage 5: (1×6-round magazine)

  • Distance 10m
  • Start Position: Low Ready
  • Sequence:
    • From strong side 3 rounds to chest, transition to weak side, 3 round to chest (~6.0 seconds)

Stage 6: (1×1-round magazine)

  • Distance 10m
  • Start Position: Standing, weapon unloaded on the ground
  • Sequence:
    • Load weapon, 1 round to chest (~5.0 seconds)

Stage 7: (1×12-round magazine)

  • Distance 20m
  • Start Position: High Ready
  • Sequence:
    • From standing, 2 rounds to the chest (~2.5 seconds)
    • Transition to kneeling, 4 round string to the chest (~4.5 seconds)
    • Transition to prone, 6 round string to the chest (~8.0 seconds)

Stage 8: (1×14-round magazine)

  • Distance: 25m
  • Start Position: High Ready
  • Sequence:
    • From strong side, 2 round string to the chest, transition to weak side, 2 rounds to the chest (~6.0 seconds)
    • Transition to strong side, 5 round string to the chest, transition to weak side, 5 rounds to the chest (~16.0 seconds)
